Lancering van Cast to Sonos
Sem Postma, January 6, 2023
Cast your Google Chrome tab to any Sonos device.
After a lot of time and a lot of testing, I’m happy to finally release this application for Sonos to the wider public!
Cast to Sonos is a browser extension for Google Chrome that allows you to stream audio to your Sonos system for free. Cast to Sonos offers a similar experience to the Chromecast feature in Chrome browsers. The extension is available in more than 40 different languages and the user numbers are growing very fast!
Cast to Sonos
How does it work?
Almost everyone is familiar with Chromecast, with which you can easily stream videos to your TV. Now you can finally, just like with Chromecast, easily stream audio to your Sonos device, for example from Youtube or Soundcloud!
Please note, Cast to Sonos is intended to play music. You will notice that there is a delay when trying to play music. You can read more about this on: https://casttosonos.com/
How do I install the extension?
You can install Cast to Sonos by opening the following URL in your Google Chrome browser: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/cast-to-sonos/defbpbmenfaikcnhmamnghdlcmahjaib?utm_campaign=p1
Once installed, you can easily cast all audio clips that you can play in Chrome to your Sonos device by going to the top right corner and clicking the puzzle icon.
By clicking on “Cast to Sonos” you can open the app. After opening the extension, you can make a choice to use the free version with limited quality or the premium version. Then you can select the room and group you want to cast to.
If you can’t connect, make sure no other app is using your Sonos device, e.g. Spotify or YouTube. Try pausing or disconnecting from the app currently using your Sonos device.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties, you can visit the “Support Page” of Chrome Web Store and leave your questions there. We will then contact you as soon as possible.
Free vs Paid
At the moment I offer a freemium pricing model, where users can pay extra for improved audio quality.
Technical note about the delay: This extension streams your audio from your tab to your Sonos device. Naturally, there is a delay because you’re not playing an audio clip, you are streaming, just like how Chromecast does it. The advantage is that it works for every website and with any kind of audio source that Google Chrome supports.
With this extension, you are not able to turn your Sonos device into PC speakers. You are better off buying a good pair of normal PC speakers.
